Common Lifecycle Marketing Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Eight lifecycle marketing mistakes Shopify brands make — from unsegmented lists to discount-by-default flows — and how to fix each one.

Common Lifecycle Marketing Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Lifecycle marketing — the emails, texts and messages that follow a customer from first visit to repeat purchase — is where many Shopify brands quietly lose revenue. The flows exist, but they were set up once and never revisited. Here are the most common mistakes we see, and how to fix each one.

1. Treating every subscriber the same

Sending the same campaign to your whole list ignores where each customer is in their journey. A first-time visitor, a repeat buyer and a lapsed customer need different messages.

Fix it: Segment by lifecycle stage — new subscriber, first-time buyer, repeat buyer, VIP, at-risk and lapsed — and plan content for each.

2. Weak or missing core flows

Many stores run a welcome email and a cart reminder and stop there.

Fix it: Make sure these flows exist and are tested: welcome series, browse abandonment, cart and checkout abandonment, post-purchase, replenishment (for consumables), win-back and sunset.

3. Discounting by default

When every flow ends in a coupon, customers learn to wait for one, and margin erodes.

Fix it: Lead with value — product education, reviews, bundles and free-shipping thresholds. Reserve discounts for specific moments, such as win-back for customers who haven't bought in a long time.

4. Ignoring the post-purchase window

The days after a first order are when a customer is most open to buying again, yet many brands send only a shipping confirmation.

Fix it: Send how-to-use content, ask for a review at the right moment, and recommend complementary products based on what was bought.

5. Never cleaning the list

Mailing people who never open hurts deliverability, so even engaged subscribers start seeing your emails in spam.

Fix it: Run a sunset flow for unengaged subscribers, suppress those who don't re-engage, and monitor bounce and spam-complaint rates.

6. Collecting data you never use

Quiz answers, preference centers and survey responses (zero-party data) often sit unused.

Fix it: Feed these answers into segments and personalize product recommendations and content with them.

7. Email and SMS working in silos

Customers receive the same offer by email and text within minutes, or the two channels contradict each other.

Fix it: Plan email and SMS together. Use SMS for time-sensitive moments and email for richer content, and respect each customer's channel preference and consent.

8. Measuring opens instead of revenue

Open rates are unreliable since Apple's Mail Privacy Protection, and they don't show whether a flow makes money.

Fix it: Track revenue per recipient, conversion rate and repeat purchase rate per flow, and test one change at a time.

Where to start

Audit your flows against this list, fix the gaps in your core flows first, then segment and personalize. If you'd like a second opinion on your Klaviyo or lifecycle setup, book a free consultation.
