Harry’s Left Its Custom Platform for Shopify: Lessons on Technical Debt
Harry’s moved from an in-house commerce platform to Shopify and Recharge in 2025. What the move shows about technical debt and subscription migrations.

Harry's, the US men's grooming brand, ran its direct-to-consumer business on a commerce platform it built in-house. In February 2025 it completed a move to Shopify, with Recharge running its subscriptions. For any brand weighing a custom platform against Shopify, it's a useful case: Harry's had the engineers to keep building — and still chose not to.
Why custom platforms get expensive
A custom platform gives total control, but every part of it is yours to maintain: hosting, security, checkout, payments, integrations and every new feature. Over time, more engineering time goes into keeping the platform running and less into the customer experience. That growing maintenance load is what "technical debt" means in practice.
Moving to a hosted platform like Shopify hands that work to the platform. Hosting, security, checkout and core commerce features are maintained for you, and your team's time goes back into product and brand.
Subscriptions were the hard part
For Harry's, subscriptions are central to the business — razor blade refills are the classic subscription product. According to Recharge's case study, the migration moved millions of subscriptions and more than a decade of data onto Shopify and Recharge. Recharge reports 100% storefront uptime through the move and a 99.9% migration success rate, and says Harry's now launches new subscription offers faster and with lower total cost of ownership.
What other brands can learn
- Subscriptions can move safely. With careful planning — data mapping, payment method migration and staged testing — subscriber continuity can be protected.
- Moving to Shopify doesn't mean looking generic. Brands keep their design and customer experience; they stop maintaining the commerce plumbing underneath.
- Total cost includes engineering time. When you compare a custom platform with Shopify, count the developer hours spent on maintenance, not just license fees.
- Choose specialist partners. Pairing Shopify with a dedicated subscription platform such as Recharge, Skio or Loop is usually better than rebuilding subscription logic yourself.
