Salesforce Commerce Cloud vs Shopify Plus (2026): Cost, Speed & When to Switch
Salesforce Commerce Cloud vs Shopify Plus compared: pricing models, total cost, checkout, speed to market and which enterprise brands should switch.

If you run an enterprise store on Salesforce Commerce Cloud (SFCC), you have probably asked whether Shopify Plus could do the same job for less. The short answer: for most direct-to-consumer and mid-market enterprise brands, Shopify Plus costs less to run and lets teams ship faster. SFCC still makes sense for a narrower group — brands deeply tied into the wider Salesforce ecosystem with very complex, multi-site needs.
This guide compares the two on the things that decide the move: how you pay, what it costs to run, how fast your team can change things, and how well the checkout converts.
Salesforce Commerce Cloud vs Shopify Plus at a glance
| Shopify Plus | Salesforce B2C Commerce Cloud | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Fixed monthly fee from $2,300/month (3-year term) or $2,500/month (1-year term), per Shopify; variable platform fee at high volume | Percentage of gross merchandise value (GMV), negotiated; Salesforce does not publish rates |
| Hosting | Fully hosted SaaS, upgrades included | Hosted by Salesforce; code deployments and cartridges managed by your developers |
| Who changes the store | Marketers and merchandisers, in the theme editor | Mostly specialist SFCC developers |
| Checkout | Shopify Checkout and Shop Pay, extended with Checkout Extensibility and Functions | Checkout built and customized on SFRA or Composable Storefront |
| Multi-site / international | Shopify Markets and expansion stores | Multiple sites, price books and locales |
| Typical implementation | Weeks to a few months | Often several months; partner estimates put many projects at $200k–$500k |
How you pay: fixed fee vs a share of every sale
Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month on a three-year term, or $2,500 per month on a one-year term, according to the Shopify Help Center; exact pricing is confirmed in a quote. High-volume merchants also pay a variable platform fee set in their contract — get it in writing before you sign.
Salesforce B2C Commerce is priced as a percentage of the GMV processed through the platform. Salesforce lists its Commerce editions as "contact for pricing"; partner estimates put the range at roughly 1–3% of GMV depending on edition, plus optional success plans. Because the fee grows with revenue, the more you sell, the more the platform costs.
For a brand doing $50 million a year, even 1% of GMV is $500,000 a year in license fees — before implementation or developers. That difference is why total cost of ownership is usually the first line in an SFCC-to-Shopify business case.
For Australian brands, Shopify lists Plus from A$3,700 a month on a 3-year term or A$4,000 on a 1-year term (Shopify Help Center). Salesforce does not publish Australian pricing either.
Total cost of ownership
License fees are only part of the bill. When we model TCO with clients, we look at four lines:
- Platform fees — fixed on Shopify Plus; tied to GMV on SFCC.
- Implementation — SFCC builds commonly run into six figures; Shopify Plus replatforms are usually faster because hosting, checkout and core features come built in.
- Ongoing development — SFCC changes typically need certified developers and planned releases; on Shopify, many changes are made by the marketing team in the theme editor or with apps.
- Apps and integrations — both platforms connect to ERPs, OMS and marketing tools; Shopify's app store means more of these are ready-made.
Speed to market
On SFCC, a new landing page, promotion or checkout tweak often goes into a development sprint. On Shopify Plus, merchandisers build pages with theme sections, schedule sales with Launchpad and automate tasks with Shopify Flow. For brands that run frequent drops and campaigns, that speed is often worth more than the license savings.
Checkout and conversion
Shopify says its checkout converts up to 36% better than competing platforms, and 15% better on average, based on a study it commissioned from one of the Big Three consulting firms. It also reports that Shop Pay can lift conversion by up to 50% compared with guest checkout. These are Shopify's own figures, so treat them as directional — but the underlying point holds: Shopify's checkout is tuned across millions of stores and improves without you rebuilding it.
On SFCC, checkout is part of your custom build. You control everything, and you also maintain everything.
When to stay on Salesforce Commerce Cloud
- Your commerce, service and marketing all run deeply on Salesforce, and that integration is core to how you operate.
- You run many brands and regions with genuinely different catalogs, rules and operations from one platform.
- You have an in-house SFCC team and the budget for its release cycle.
When to move to Shopify Plus
- Platform fees are growing faster than your margin.
- Simple changes wait weeks for development.
- You want a faster, continuously improving checkout.
- You want your marketing team to run the storefront day to day.
Brands have made this move. Jewelry brand John Hardy, for example, moved from Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify Plus (case study from its agency, We Make Websites).
What a migration involves
For project price ranges and how to build the business case, see our SFCC to Shopify migration cost guide.
A typical SFCC-to-Shopify Plus replatform takes 3–6 months for an enterprise build. The work covers catalogs and price books, customers and order history, promotions rebuilt as discounts and Shopify Functions, content, integrations with your OMS and ERP, and a full SEO redirect plan across every site and locale. FAQ
Is Shopify Plus cheaper than Salesforce Commerce Cloud? For most brands, yes. Shopify Plus has a fixed monthly fee, from $2,300 a month per Shopify; SFCC charges a negotiated percentage of GMV, so its cost rises with revenue.
Can Shopify Plus handle enterprise volume? Yes. Shopify Plus runs on Shopify's global infrastructure and handles peak events such as Black Friday without separate hosting work.
Can Shopify Plus support multiple regions? Yes — Shopify Markets covers currencies, languages and domains, and expansion stores handle separate brands or regions.
How long does a migration from SFCC take? Usually 3–6 months, depending on the number of sites, integrations and custom features.
Will we lose SEO rankings? Not if every URL is mapped and redirected, metadata is carried over and rankings are monitored after launch.
