Magento to Shopify Migration Cost in 2026: What You’ll Actually Pay
What a Magento to Shopify migration really costs in 2026: one-time project ranges by store size, Shopify plan prices, the Magento costs you stop paying, and Adobe’s support deadlines.
If you run a Magento or Adobe Commerce store, the question is rarely whether Shopify could work. It's what the move will really cost — once, and every year after. This guide breaks down both, using published prices where they exist and clearly labeled estimates where they don't.
The short answer: most Magento to Shopify migrations cost somewhere between about $5,000 for a small, simple store and $150,000 or more for an enterprise or B2B build. After launch, you swap Magento's hosting, license and maintenance bills for a Shopify subscription — from $39 a month on Basic to around $2,300–$2,500 a month on Shopify Plus — plus apps.
Migration cost at a glance
Agencies publish different numbers, but the ranges they quote line up closely. These are planning ranges, not quotes:
| Store profile | Typical one-time cost | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Small: simple catalog, standard theme, few extensions | $5,000–$20,000 | 4–6 weeks |
| Mid-size: larger catalog, custom theme, several integrations | $20,000–$60,000 | 6–10 weeks |
| Enterprise / B2B: ERP or PIM, customer-specific pricing, multiple store views | $60,000–$150,000+ | 3–6 months |
Cost ranges are based on published agency pricing from Ecommerce Partners and Presta. Timelines are the ones we plan to on our own Magento to Shopify migrations.
Cheaper options exist — automated migration tools and freelancers can move basic product and customer data for a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. They work for very simple stores. They don't rebuild your design, replace custom extensions, reconnect integrations or protect your search rankings, which is where most of the real work sits.
What drives the price
Two stores with the same revenue can have very different migration budgets. These are the factors that move the number most:
- Custom modules and extensions. Every Magento extension has to be replaced with a built-in Shopify feature, an app or a small custom app. A store with five extensions and a store with fifty are different projects.
- Integrations. ERP, OMS, 3PL, PIM and accounting connections need to be rebuilt and tested. This is usually the biggest single driver for mid-size and enterprise stores.
- Design. Moving your current design onto a Shopify theme costs less than a full redesign. Many brands combine the two, because the theme is being rebuilt anyway.
- Catalog structure. Large configurable products, bundles and hundreds of custom attributes take careful mapping to Shopify variants, metafields and metaobjects.
- History and data volume. Years of orders, customer accounts, reviews and gift card balances all need importing and checking.
- B2B and multiple store views. Customer groups, tier prices and several websites map to Shopify B2B catalogs, Markets or expansion stores — more planning, more testing.
- SEO protection. Shopify uses fixed URL paths such as /products/ and /collections/, so nearly every Magento URL changes. Each one needs a 301 redirect, which means crawling, mapping and testing thousands of URLs on larger stores.
What you'll pay on Shopify every year
Shopify publishes its plan prices. As of 2026, in the US:
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39/month | $29/month |
| Grow | $105/month | $79/month |
| Advanced | $399/month | $299/month |
| Shopify Plus | From $2,500/month on a 1-year term | From $2,300/month on a 3-year term |
Plan prices from Shopify's pricing page and Shopify Plus pricing, as reported in July–October 2026. Higher-volume Plus merchants may be offered a variable, revenue-based platform fee instead; Shopify doesn't publish that rate, so it appears in your quote. For the full breakdown, see Shopify Plus pricing explained.
In Australia, Shopify lists its plans in Australian dollars: Basic A$56, Grow A$149 and Advanced A$575 a month billed monthly (A$42, A$114 and A$431 billed yearly), and Shopify Plus from A$3,700 a month on a 3-year term or A$4,000 on a 1-year term (Shopify Australia pricing, Shopify Plus plan).
On top of the plan, budget for:
- Payment processing. Card rates fall as plans get higher. Using a payment provider other than Shopify Payments adds an extra transaction fee on most plans.
- Apps. Most migrated stores replace a handful of Magento extensions with paid apps — reviews, subscriptions, search, loyalty. Most range from free to a few hundred dollars a month.
- Ongoing development. Far less than on Magento, but still worth a budget for new features and design changes.
What you stop paying on Magento
This is the side of the calculation that's easy to underestimate.
- Hosting and infrastructure. Servers, CDN, caching, search (OpenSearch) and scaling for traffic peaks. On Shopify, hosting is included in every plan.
- Adobe Commerce license. Adobe doesn't publish its prices; contracts are negotiated and usually tied to your gross merchandise value. Industry estimates put the on-premise license at roughly $22,000 a year for smaller merchants up to $125,000 or more, and Adobe Commerce Cloud higher still (Swell's summary of published agency estimates). Magento Open Source has no license fee, but you carry all hosting and security yourself.
- Upgrades and security patches. Each Magento release is supported for a fixed window, then you have to upgrade — usually a development project in its own right. On Shopify, updates and security fixes are applied for you.
- Extension maintenance. Keeping dozens of third-party modules compatible after every upgrade.
Why 2026–2027 is a decision point
Adobe's lifecycle policy sets an end date for every Magento 2.4 release. Several are close:
| Version | Standard support ends | Extended support ends |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4.5 | August 12, 2025 | August 11, 2026 |
| 2.4.6 | August 11, 2026 | August 31, 2027 |
| 2.4.7 | May 31, 2027 | May 31, 2028 |
| 2.4.8 | May 31, 2028 | Not yet announced |
| 2.4.9 | May 31, 2029 | Not yet announced |
If your store runs 2.4.6 or earlier, you're already facing an upgrade project. That's the moment many brands compare the cost of upgrading Magento against the cost of moving — because the upgrade buys time, while the migration removes upgrade projects altogether.

Costs people forget to budget for
- Customer sign-in. Passwords can't be moved between platforms. On Shopify's passwordless customer accounts, customers sign in with a one-time email code instead, so a short "how sign-in works now" message at launch is enough. How customer accounts migrate.
- Gift cards. Importing existing gift card balances requires Shopify Plus. On other plans, balances need another approach.
- A short SEO dip. Even well-redirected migrations can see rankings move for a few weeks while Google re-crawls. Good redirects and fast fixes after launch keep it short.
- Team training. Your team will run the store differently — usually more independently — but it takes a few sessions to get there.
- Running both platforms briefly. Keep Magento (and its hosting) live until the final data sync and launch are done.
How to keep the cost down
- Cut before you move. Retire extensions, attributes and store views nobody uses. Every one you drop is one less thing to rebuild.
- Use built-in Shopify features first. B2B, Markets, Flow, bundles and metaobjects now cover much of what once needed custom Magento code.
- Decide on design early. Changing the design brief mid-project is one of the most expensive surprises.
- Choose the right plan. Not every Magento store needs Shopify Plus. Many mid-size stores run well on Grow or Advanced.
- Insist on a written redirect plan. Losing organic traffic costs more than any migration line item.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to migrate from Magento to Shopify? Most projects fall between about $5,000 for a small, simple store and $150,000 or more for enterprise and B2B stores. The biggest drivers are custom extensions, integrations, design and catalog complexity.
Is Shopify cheaper than Magento? For most brands, yes, once hosting, license fees, upgrades and developer maintenance are counted. Shopify Plus starts at around $2,300–$2,500 a month, while Adobe Commerce licenses are commonly estimated at $22,000 to over $125,000 a year before hosting and development. Always compare your own figures.
How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take? Typically 4–6 weeks for small stores, 6–10 weeks for mid-size stores and 3–6 months for enterprise or B2B builds.
Do I need Shopify Plus? Not always. Plus makes sense for high-volume stores, complex B2B, checkout customization or several stores. Many mid-size Magento stores fit Grow or Advanced.
Will I lose my Google rankings? Not if every old URL is redirected to its new address and the launch is monitored. Rankings can move for a few weeks while Google re-crawls, then settle.
