How Long Does a Magento to Shopify Migration Take? (2026)

Typical Magento to Shopify timelines by store size, what happens in each phase, and what speeds a migration up or slows it down.

"How long will it take?" is the second question every Magento store owner asks, right after "how much will it cost?" The answer depends far more on your integrations and custom features than on how many products you sell. This guide sets out typical timelines by store size, what happens in each phase, and what speeds a project up or slows it down.

The short answer: a small Magento store with a standard theme usually moves to Shopify in 4–6 weeks, a mid-size store in 6–10 weeks, and an enterprise or B2B store with ERP integrations and several store views in 3–6 months. The real timeline is fixed after an audit of your extensions, integrations and data.

Typical timelines by store size

Store profile Typical timeline What drives it
Small: simple catalog, standard theme, few extensions 4–6 weeks Data clean-up, theme set-up, redirects
Mid-size: larger catalog, custom theme, several integrations 6–10 weeks Custom theme, ERP or 3PL connection, extension replacement
Enterprise / B2B: ERP or PIM, customer-specific pricing, several store views 3–6 months Integrations, B2B pricing, several markets, approvals

These are the ranges we plan to on our own Magento to Shopify migrations. Your audit sets the real figure.

What happens in each phase

For a mid-size store, a typical 6–10 week project looks like this:

Phase Typical timing What happens
Audit Week 1 Extensions, integrations, data and SEO reviewed; scope and plan fixed
Map Weeks 1–2 Field-by-field data map and the full redirect plan
Build Weeks 2–8 Theme, apps and integrations built on Shopify
Test runs Weeks 6–9 Trial imports, record counts, checkout and integration testing
Launch Weeks 8–10 Final data sync, domain switch and live checks
Hypercare First 2–4 weeks after launch Search Console monitoring, fixes and support

Several phases overlap. Data mapping and theme work usually run side by side.

What makes a migration take longer

  1. Integrations. Each ERP, OMS, 3PL or PIM connection needs building and testing. This is usually the biggest factor. See our Shopify NetSuite integration guide for what's involved.
  2. Custom extensions. Every Magento extension needs a replacement: a Shopify feature, an app or a small custom app.
  3. B2B pricing. Customer groups and tier prices need mapping to Shopify B2B catalogs and price lists.
  4. Several store views. Each language, currency or brand needs its own content, pricing and redirects.
  5. A full redesign. Moving your current design is faster than designing a new one.
  6. Slow decisions. Waiting for sign-off on designs, data rules or launch dates often costs more time than the technical work.

What speeds it up

  • Cut before you move. Remove extensions, attributes and store views nobody uses.
  • Use built-in Shopify features first. B2B, Markets, Flow and bundles cover much of what once needed custom Magento code.
  • Decide on design early, and keep the brief stable.
  • Name one decision-maker for each area: catalog, customers, finance and marketing.
  • Avoid peak season. Leave a buffer before Black Friday and other busy periods.

Can we keep selling during the migration?

Yes. Your Magento store keeps taking orders right up to launch. A final sync just before the switch brings across orders and customers created during the build, and the domain switch itself usually takes minutes.

Version deadlines and timing

If your store runs Magento 2.4.6 or earlier, support has ended or is ending soon. Plan backwards from the date that matters to you, and leave room for testing. Our Magento 2 end of support guide lists every version's dates.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take? Typically 4–6 weeks for small stores, 6–10 weeks for mid-size stores and 3–6 months for enterprise or B2B stores.

What takes the most time? Usually integrations with ERP, OMS or 3PL systems, followed by replacing custom extensions and B2B pricing.

Can the migration be done faster? Yes, by reducing scope: launching on an existing theme, cutting unused extensions and phasing integrations after launch.

Will the store go offline? No. The Magento store keeps trading until launch, and the switch is planned for a quiet trading window.

How long until SEO settles after launch? Rankings can move for a few weeks while Google recrawls the site. With full redirects, they usually settle. See our migration SEO guide.

When should we start planning? At least one to two months before your target date for a mid-size store, and longer for enterprise builds.
